Rainey travelled south at the weekend to face Dublin-based Wanderers in the AIL. Missing several players, they were on the wrong end of a 58-24 defeat, a bonus point for tries scored their only consolation.

Visitors to Hatrick Park on Saturday could have justifiably concluded they were seeing double, with both visiting teams, Sligo and Lurgan, in near identical yellow, black and red hooped jerseys. Sadly, the results in both matches were also similar, the visitors emerging victorious in both cases. Rainey 1st XV opened their AIL campaign against Sligo, eventually going down to a heart-breaking loss in a 31-33 thriller.

Following last week’s close 32-36 home defeat to Armagh in the opening salvo of the newly revamped Ulster Senior League, Rainey were on the road this weekend to AIL 2A side Malone. Rainey’s starting XV showed three changes from last week. Mark Mulholland started on the wing, while Adam and Lee Montgomery took up positions in the backrow. The addition of Kieran Doherty and John McCusker to the bench completed the reshuffle.
